Many years ago I climbed into an army jeep parked in front of my parents’ house. A bright-eyed army recruiter asked me if I was ready. My response to his question was, “I guess I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.”
I had no way of knowing that on that hot early summer morning that that phrase of, “I guess I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.” would become a major part of my life’s journey. Here are some examples: When my best-man, standing next to me in the back foyer of the church, asked me if I was really ready to get married. When my new bride later asked me if I was ready for that big job interview. And then there was that time when my father asked if I was ready to be a dad that late night in the hospital. And of course I can’t forget that time when my first-born child went off to her first day of school.
I have repeatedly used that mantra ever since that time I sat in that army jeep at 18 years old, of “I guess I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.” I have used it a lot in my life, and because of it I’ve lived a lot of life throughout my years. I can only imagine what life events are coming next… Well, no matter what they are, I hope I continue to have the courage of that 18 year old who responded, “I guess I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.” Hey, take it from me, taking action when we are not fully ready is okay because it means that we are taking action and living our lives fully.
Now teens, go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us. Remember that we are as ready as we are ever going to be, and we need to face our next challenge right here, right now. So let’s jump in with both feet. And once again, thanks in advance for all that you do, and all that you will do…
